- Diary kept by James S. Valk, 1836-1879. Describes his youth in Hanover, Germany; emigration to New York, and via Isthmus of Panama, to California; mining of gold and platinum at Gold Beach, Oregon; an 1856 Indian attack; slaying of Ben Wright; costs of provisions; Indian customs; and events in San Francisco. Two copies; the second has variations and is partly in the hand of the author.
