Summary

Costume design drawings for the ten dancers in Jerome Robbins's ballet Dances at a gathering. Each depicts a single dancer in color, with fabric swatches, Pantone color chips or painted color samples, and sometimes designer's notations. The dancers are, in order of appearance in the binder, Patricia McBride, Sara Leland, Kay Mazzo, Violette Verdy (drawing labeled "Verdi"), Allegra Kent, Edward Villella (labeled "Vilella"), Anthony Blum, Robert Maiorano (labeled "Miarano"), Bruce Wells, and John Clifford. These designs are followed by seven graphite or felt pen drawings depicting details of the costumes, mostly of the men's shirts, though the women's dresses are shown in two drawings.

• Also includes a sheet of fabric swatches and Pantone color chips labeled "Kettentanz Arpino men," intended for Gerald Arpino's ballet Kettentanz, first presented by the Joffrey Ballet in 1971.

• Dances at a gathering (choreography, Jerome Robbins; music, Frédéric Chopin; costumes, Joe Eula) was first performed by the New York City Ballet in 1969. It was the first work created for the company by Robbins after a twelve year absence, and was hailed as a masterpiece. Robbins has stated that his primary inspiration was the music of Chopin, and Eula's costume designs complement both the elegance and the folk influence that Robbins conveyed through his choreography.
• Joe Eula, 1925-2004, was a noted fashion illustrator. He also designed album covers and posters for musicians, and costumes for television, Broadway, and the New York City Ballet.
