- Description
- 1 print : lithograph, color; 34 x 27 cm.
- Summary
- Sheet music cover illustration depicting five female ballet dancers. The central figure, whose long hair is loose over her shoulders, is airborne; the others pose decoratively around her. Though they are costumed in knee-length white tutus with pink wings and scarves, they do not project the otherworldly quality of the iconic sylphide danced by Marie Taglioni in the ballet La sylphide (1832). The title of the musical composition, however, suggests the lasting influence of the ballet. It is not known whether this image depicts an actual ballet or theatrical production. The "polka" of the title probably indicates the composition's musical form rather than the dance performed in the illustration.
