Description
15 prints : etching, engraving, b&w; 31 x 32 cm. or smaller.
Summary
Collection of reproductive prints after paintings or prints by or attributed to the British painter William Hogarth. Three prints are by unidentified engravers: The laughing audience; Analysis of beauty, plate 2, which depicts a scene in a ballroom; and 3 characters, 4 caricaturas. A copy of Hogarth's Strolling actresses dressing in a barn, image reversed, is by the German engraver Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen. Eleven prints were engraved by Thomas Cook (sometimes signed T. Cook and Son) and published by the London firm of Longman, Hurst, Rees & Orme between 1806 and 1809. These are titled: Strolling players, a reversed image of Strolling actresses dressing in a barn; Masquerade at Somerset House; Southwark Fair [reversed image]; For the benefit of [comic actor James] Spiller [title from banner on print]; A just view of the British stage; Sancho at the feast starved by his physician [reversed image]; The lecture; Blackwell's military figures, plate I, pikemen; Blackwell's military figures, plate II, halberd men; Ticket of the London Hospital [reversed image; rectangular format]; [John] Rich's triumphal entry. According to scholar Ronald Paulson, the attribution of Rich's triumphal entry to Hogarth is doubtful.
