Description
3 prints : wood engraving, steel engraving, color; 27 x 17 cm. or smaller.
Summary
Three leaves from Les papillons, ou metamorphoses terrestres des peuples de l'air par Amédée Varin, texte par Eu[gène] Nus et An[tony] Meray, published in Paris by Gabriel de Gonet; originally issued in parts. This collection includes the title page, which is a hand-colored wood engraving drawn by Varin and engraved by Victor Corbay, and two leaves, respectively headed Le triomphe de cypris and Vertu médicale du boléro, both illustrated with hand-colored steel engravings by Varin. The title page depicts a winding procession of butterflies with folded wings and other insects, some of them anthropomorphized. Le triomphe de cypris and Vertu médicale du boléro respectively depict male and female human figures with butterfly wings and antennae. The female figure wears a costume similar to those worn by ballerinas of the period.
