Description
9 prints : lithograph, color; 41 x 30 cm. or smaller.
Summary
Costume designs for Rafaelle Grassi's ballet Rodope, including the title role of Rodope, a Thracian slave girl; Nofre, a slave and companion to Rodope; the Greek poet Esopo [Aesop]; Amasi [Amasis], the king of Egypt; an Arabian female dancer; two female slaves; and two male slaves, one Arabian and one Egyptian.
Subjects
Genre/Form
  • Costume design drawings.
  • Lithographs.
Note
  • Signed on stone.
  • The signature on the print Schiava [with cymbals] is very faint.
Biography (note)
  • As indicated by their publication place and date, these designs may have been created for the ballet's production at the Teatro Apollo in Rome during the carnival-Lenten season of 1885-1886. The ballet, danced to music by Paolo Giorza, had previously been presented in Turin. A production at La Scala, Milan, in 1891-1892 was performed in costumes designed by Luigi Zamperoni. Rodope was based on a story that has been called the oldest literary archetype of the Cinderella story, in which the slave girl or courtesan Rodope (Rhodope in Greek) ultimately marries the Egyptian pharaoh.
  • Alfredo Edel, an Italian-born costume designer and illustrator, came from an artistic family of Alsatian roots. He designed numerous costumes for La Scala in Milan, including those for Luigi Manzotti's ballets Excelsior and Amor. He also worked in England, France, and the United States for performers ranging from the Comédie française to P.T. Barnum.
