Description
1 print : etching, engraving, b&w; 39 x 52 cm., image 37 x 49 cm.
Summary
Reproductive print of plate II from Hogarth's book The analysis of beauty, first published in London in 1753. The German title on this print suggests that it was one of the two folded plates published in the German edition of 1754, which was translated by Christlob Mylius in consultation with Hogarth. The print depicts a scene in a ballroom decorated with paintings and statues. With the exception of the couple at the far left, most of the dancers appear to be caricatures. The scene is sometimes said to represent the Earl of Tynley and his household at the Wanstead Assembly. The images that frame it illustrate points discussed in Hogarth's text, which set forth his aesthetic principles.
