Summary

Prints of the English dancer-actress Louise Fairbrother. The lithograph, which is titled Columbine, is a three-quarter-length portrait, without coloring except for the faint pink of her lips and cheeks. The colored etching, published in the series Lacy's dramatic costumes, appears to have been copied from a lithograph by John Brandard after a drawing by J.W. Childe. It depicts Fairbrother playing the breeches role of Abdullah, sometimes called Aladdin, in G.A. Beckett and Mark Lemon's play Open sesame, or a night with the forty thieves, presented at the Lyceum Theatre in London in 1844.

• Sarah Louise (or Louisa) Fairbrother, 1816-1890, made her stage debut in London in 1827, and performed at Covent Garden and Drury Lane in the 1830s. She frequently performed male roles, though she also played Columbine in the Christmas pantomime Harlequin and the merrie devil of Edmonton in 1839. Unfettered by convention, she bore children to different fathers, and became the morganatic wife of the second Duke of Cambridge.
