Description
1 print : lithograph, b&w; 35 x 47 cm., line border 25 x 36 cm.
Summary
Three scenes of a Carnival celebration at the Elysium, an entertainment center in the cellars of the Seitzerhof in Vienna. Well-dressed men and women gather in fancifully decorated rooms to enjoy performances of dance and music (the latter provided by musicians in costume) and partake of refreshments. On the left of the lower register, a dancer apparently dressed in a Greek tunic performs in front of a classical portico. Overlapping that scene is the backdrop of a moonlit pine forest populated by musicians costumed as a dog playing a wind instrument, a bagpipe-playing bear, a lion cranking a hurdy-gurdy, and two scantily-clad male instrumentalists who apparently represent denizens of some tropic clime.
