Biography (note)
  • This image was originally published in The cryes of the city of London drawne after the life, published by Pierce Tempest in 1688. In that edition, however, the prints were not numbered (as may be seen on the version posted on the British Museum's online catalog). This print, which is numbered 64, probably comes from the second edition, published by Henry Overton in 1711.
  • The artist Marcel or Marcellus Lauron came from The Hague to England, where his last name was anglicized as Laroon. Also known as "Old Laroon" to distinguish him from his son, who had the same name, he is said to have specialized in low-life genre scenes. In its online catalog, the Victoria and Albert Museum, which also holds copies of this image, speculates that it may depict a German rope dancer who appeared at London's Bartholomew Fair (a source of popular entertainment), since the word "Deutsch" (German) was often corrupted into "Dutch." In a second print from the The cryes of the city of London, held by the British Museum, the rope walker is depicted falling off the rope.
