Description
2 prints : wood engraving, color; 42 x 56 cm. or smaller.
Summary
Parts of a toy theatre, containing scenery for a féerie or fairy play. No. 1648, labeled "Fond de féerie," depicts a backdrop of four elephants and their mahouts in a pool. A crowned female fairy, brandishing a wand, sits atop a flower borne aloft on the elephants' trunks. The pool is filled with frogs on lily pads, spouting water; two more fairies flank the scene; and a row of elephants stand guard in the background. No. 1649, "Coulisses de la féerie," contains two matching pairs of wings, intended to be placed at either side of the stage. The pair labeled "Coulisse du 2me plan" depict frontal views of elephants with turbaned mahouts seated atop them. The pair labeled "Coulisse du 1er plan" combine images of peacocks, women (priestesses or sorceresses?) with tripods, lyres, lions, and Assyrian bas-reliefs.
