  • The opera L'étoile du nord (music, Giacomo Meyerbeer; libretto, Eugène Scribe) was first presented at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1854. This print may depict a scene from the second act, in which the czar Peter the Great, disguised as a captain, follows his lady-love Catherine, disguised as a man, to a military camp.
  • The polka-mazurka, popular in the 1840s, consisted of polka steps danced to the 3/4 time of the mazurka.
