Sheet music cover illustration depicting a scene from Jean Coralli's ballet La péri. Four women in oriental costume, their arms around one another's waists, dance on a terrace, with musicians playing behind them. A trellised bower stands at right, sheltering female onlookers. In the background is a city with domes and minarets.

  • La péri (choreography, Jean Coralli; music, Friedrich Burgmüller; scenario, Théophile Gautier and Jean Coralli) was first presented at the Paris Opéra in 1843. This print probably depicts a moment from Act II, which is set on the terrace of the hero Achmet's palace, which offers a view of Cairo. The women of Achmet's harem, jealous of his favorite slave Leila (who is a peri or Middle Eastern fairy in disguise), attempt to win back his favor by the superiority of their dancing.
