Summary

Illustrations chiefly of ballroom or social dancing from American, British, and French periodicals of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Seven prints date from the 1860s and five from the 1890s, with the others ranging from the 1840s to the 1900s. The largest number of prints in this collection were published in Harper's Weekly, New York; five are from the Illustrated London News; three from Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper (later called Leslie's Illustrated Weekly), New York. The collection has been arranged in four groups by these three titles and the category Others, for periodicals represented by only one or two prints.

Biography (note)

• The Illustrated London News, said to be the world's first fully illustrated newspaper, was founded in 1842 by Herbert Ingram, a printer and newsagent. It aimed to cover a wide range of topics and embody a high moral tone, eschewing the currently popular focus on sensational crimes. Frank Leslie (born Henry Carter), a former engraver for the Illustrated London News, founded Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper in 1855 in New York City. Harper's Weekly was founded in 1857 by Fletcher Harper; among its illustrators were Winslow Homer and Thomas Nast. It too was intended to appeal to readers in upper- and middle-class families.
• Josephine DeNatale Butler, 1911-1996, was a dance educator, historian, and author. She began her career in fashion design, but in 1936 she and her husband Albert Butler founded the Albert Butler School of Dance, which she directed for fifty years. They also collaborated on the monumental Encyclopedia of social dancing, versions of which first appeared in the late 1960s. In 1970 she created an archive of social dancing, encompassing print materials, moving images, and other memorabilia, at the Dance Collection (today known as the Jerome Robbins Dance Division) of New York Public Library. These prints were among a collection of additional materials donated to the Library by her estate in 1996, selections from which appeared in the Library's exhibition Cotillion to cakewalk: social dance prints, presented from May 19-Sept. 13, 1997.
