Summary
Sheet music cover illustration depicting a dancing couple, both wearing peaked hats and carrying pistols in holsters at their waists. The woman, on the right, curves her right arm over her head as she and the man link their left hands. He places his right hand at his waist and leans away from her, gazing at her face.

  • Though attributed to Roberto Focosi, this music cover reproduces an image created by John Brandard, depicting a moment from Jules Perrot's ballet Catarina, ou la fille du bandit (music, Cesare Pugni). First performed at Her Majesty's Theatre, London, in 1846, the ballet's cast was led by the Danish ballerina Lucile Grahn in the title role, Perrot as her lieutenant Diavolino, and Louis Gosselin as the painter Salvator Rosa, an actual historical figure. Brandard's lithograph portrays Perrot and Grahn in a pas de deux from the ballet.

Brandard's print illustrated the sheet music for Cesare Pugni's composition La saltarella from Catarina.
