Details
- Description
- 4 prints : lithograph, b&w; 29 x 24 cm., on mount 39 x 28 cm.
- Summary
- Cartoons from an unidentified periodical. As the series title indicates, the cartoons focus on activities in the wings or behind the scenes. Three depict the interactions of female dancers and their male patrons; in the fourth print, the man involved is the costume designer (or so he claims). Each print is captioned with a brief dialogue between its subjects.

- Cartoons (Commentary)
- Lithographs.
- Note
- Signed on stone.
- Series caption title.
- At lower left of each print: A. de Vresse [publisher?].
- At lower right of each print: Lith. Destouches.
- Biography (note)
- The nineteenth-century was titillated by the interactions between female dancers, variously known as ballet girls or opera dancers, and their male patrons, who were usually wealthier, older, and of a higher social class. Edgar Degas's images of the ballet often included the shadowy figures of these men, clad in their black evening clothes and opera hats. Dancers and their patrons became a favorite subject of caricaturists, possibly because of the opportunities they offered for commentary (sometimes savage) on contemporary mores.
- Louis Pierre Gabriel Bernard Morel-Retz, a French painter, watercolorist, and etcher, was probably best-known for his caricatures, which he produced under the pseudonym Stop. His caricatures were published in French satirical periodicals such as the Journal amusant and Le Charivari, possible sources of the cartoons in this collection.
