  • Engraving of a detail from Raphael's painting Parnassus in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican Palace. Begun ca. 1509-1510, the painting depicts the Greek god Apollo on Mount Parnassus, his dwelling place, surrounded by the nine Muses and poets representing both the ancient world and Raphael's own time. Despite this print's caption, the identification of this particular Muse as Terpsichore, Muse of the dance, is uncertain; interpreters of Raphael's painting differ in their identifications of the nine Muses.
