- Biography (note)
- Although clear links have not yet been established, the three titles on this print may relate to féeries or fairy plays produced in Parisian theatres in the mid nineteenth century. Peau d'ane, based on Charles Perrault's fairy tale, appeared at the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin in 1838, with a libretto by Emile Vanderbruch and Laurencin. A new version, credited to Vanderbruch, Laurencin, and Clairville, was presented at the Théâtre de la Gaité in 1863. Aladin ou la lampe merveilleuse may depict the féerie written by Adolphe D'Ennery and Hector Crémieux, produced at the Théâtre Impérial du Chatelet in 1863. La poule aux oeufs d'or, written by D'Ennery and Clairville, was first performed at the Théâtre du Cirque National in 1848.
- The term "image d'Epinal" signifies a cheap colored woodcut or wood engraving, named after Epinal, the French provincial town that was their center of production in the nineteenth-century. Although these prints had a long history and portrayed both secular and religious subject matter, in the second half of the nineteenth century the Pellerin family of Epinal gained special recognition for their images designed for children.
