Biography (note)
  • Most of the dancers in this collection are portrayed in full-length views, in costumes and poses associated with their famous roles. Although the ballet titles are not given on the prints of Pauline Duvernay, Pauline Leroux, and Marie Taglioni, Duvernay is represented in Jean Aumer's The sleeping beauty, Leroux in Joseph Mazilier's Le diable amoureux, and Taglioni in her signature role, La sylphide, in the ballet of the same title choreographed by her father Filippo Taglioni. The print of Auguste Vestris was doubtlessly intended as a caricature, as indicated by the caption's punning reference to his first name, the moneybag he carries in his left hand, and the pair of monkeys that imitate his pose.
  • Richard Park Beard, 1925-2009, the former owner of these prints, made his debut as a professional dancer with Ballet International in 1944, and subsequently danced with Ballet Theatre, Ballet Society, and the New York City Ballet. He also danced and choreographed for television and nightclub shows.
