- Biography (note)
- The image of Esmeralda, the good-hearted Gypsy heroine of Victor Hugo's novel Notre-Dame de Paris (1831), dancing with her pet goat Djali, was frequently represented on nineteenth-century sheet music cover illustrations. Though some of the illustrations and the music compositions they accompanied may have been inspired directly by the novel, others may have been influenced by theatre works such as Louise Bertin's opera La Esmeralda (first performed in Paris, 1836, with a libretto written by Hugo) and Jules Perrot's highly popular ballet Esmeralda (first performed in London, 1844).
