Summary
Numbered costume prints depicting actors and singers in Parisian theatrical presentations, produced by the lithographic firm of G. [Godefroy] Engelmann. All except one bear the initials AG, for the costume designer Auguste Garneray. The exception, captioned "Vizentini d'après Lecomte," was drawn or designed by Augustin Vizentini after Hippolyte Lecomte. Although the items in this collection have been arranged consecutively in numerical order, they may belong to various series; note that two prints bear the number 3.

Biography (note)
  • Auguste Garneray was a Parisian painter, printmaker, illustrator, and stage designer who designed costumes for the Académie Royale de Musique, the Paris Opéra, and the Théâtre Français. He was particularly noted for his skill at adapting contemporary costume to evoke other countries and periods.
  • The Bibliothèque Nationale de France, which also holds a copy of the print of Mr. Garcia in Don Juan, identifies it as planche 3 of the series Recueil de tous les ouvrages dramatiques.
  • The works depicted are: Baudouin, comte de Provence, ou la retour des croisades, a mélodrame written by Jean-Baptiste Mardelle, with music by Adrien Quaisain and Morange, first presented at the Théâtre de l'Ambigu-Comique, Paris, in 1807; Le paria, a tragedy by Casimir Delavigne, first presented at the second Théâtre Français in 1821; Don Giovanni, an opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, presented at the Théâtre Royal Italien in 1820; La neige ou le nouvel Eginhard, an opéra-comique by Daniel Auber, presented at the Théâtre Royal de Opéra-Comique in 1823; Otello, ossia il moro di Venezia, an opera by Gioacchino Rossini, presented at the Théâtre Italien in 1821; Abufar, ou la famille arabe, a tragedy by Jean-François Ducis, first presented in 1795; Hamlet, tragedy adapted by Jean-François Ducis after William Shakespeare, first presented by the Comédie-Française in 1769.
