Description
2 prints : lithograph, b&w; 35 x 47 cm. or smaller.
Summary
Scenes of fashionable gatherings. In the print titled Erste Maskirte Akademie or Prémière académie masquée, the guests in the foreground wear fanciful costumes, and many are masked. The center of the room is occupied by tables, possibly for card playing or gambling. A group of three women and two men in a curtained-off section of the gallery at right may be royal or aristocratic personages. Although this scene ostensibly takes place at a fancy-dress ball, and musicians are present on the gallery, no one appears to be dancing. Elisium in Wien is titled after its location, the Elysium, an underground entertainment center in the Seitzerhof, a Viennese inn. In the elaborately decorated chamber, the guests converse, ogle one another, or sedately dance as musicians play on a gallery.
