- Summary
- Collection of prints culled from various sources, depicting the nineteenth-century ballerina Marie Taglioni. It includes two depictions of the dancer in action, one of them a wood engraving after A.E. Chalon's portrayal of Taglioni in the role of Zoloé in Andre Deshayes' ballet La bayadère (London, 1831). Also included are a caricature, various tributes, and a portrait. The caricature accompanies an "Ode to Taglioni" and depicts the ballerina flanked by two female dancers drawn as umbrellas, possibly a reference to the rain mentioned in the ode. A full-page illustration from the Illustrated London News surrounds a portrayal of Taglioni as the Sylphide with smaller figures of other dancers, putti, lyres and other musical instruments, and a trio of Grecian ladies, probably the Graces. The Taglioni testimonial depicts a statuette of the huntress goddess Diana and the sleeping Endymion, presented to the ballerina by her admirers.

- Biography (note)
- Marie Taglioni is often said to have ushered in the Romantic era of ballet with her portrayal of the ethereal Sylphide in her father Filippo's ballet La sylphide (1832). Her dancing made weightlessness and ineffable grace the hallmarks of the ballerina, and created a fad for supernatural female creatures in ballet.
