Description
29 prints (17 sheets) : wood engraving, chiefly b&w; 41 x 41 cm. or smaller.
Summary
Illustrations of social dancing from nineteenth-century periodicals, including the Illustrated London News, the Pictorial Times, Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, Harper's Weekly, and L'Illustrazione italiana. Two examples come from unidentified periodicals. Some sheets contain more than one print, including non-dance subjects. Most of the prints in this collection depict dancing at upper-class social events, but there are also images of more plebeian masked balls, dances at carnival season, and an informal social dance in San Antonio, Texas. The collection is arranged in chronological order; dates given in brackets are handwritten or conjectural rather than printed on the item.
