Summary

Collection culled from a variety of sources, depicting action drawings or portraits of women dancers chiefly active during the nineteenth century. Some of the women are better known as actresses or singers but appear here in dance poses or costumes. The collection has been arranged alphabetically by the performers' surnames.

Biography (note)

Brief notes on various dancers: Louise Blanche, b. 1826 in Portsmouth, England, danced at the Lyceum, Strand, and other London theatres. The dancer identified here as Marietta Bonfanti is probably the Italian-born ballerina Maria Bonfanti, who toured and taught in the United States. The actress Esther de Bongars appeared on the Parisian stage from 1832 to 1856. Melle. Chameroy, whose first name is variously given as Marie Adrienne, Adrienne, or Louise, was a dancer at the Paris Opéra. Signora Ciocca is probably Giovanna Ciocca, an Italian ballerina who came to the United States in 1847, and performed with George Washington Smith. This collection's two prints of Danish ballerina Lucile Grahn both depict her in a much-copied pose from the ballet La sylphide, which she first danced in August Bournonville's version in 1836. The Austrian-born dancer Teresa or Thérèse Héberlé danced in Italy in the 1820s-1830s. The dancer identified as A. Mérante may be Annette Mérante. In the cartoon of Marfa Muravʹëva, the word Diavolina is both the title and the main character (danced by Muravʹëva) of Arthur Saint-Léon's ballet, first presented at the Paris Opéra in 1863. Le lac des fées, an opera by Daniel Auber (first presented at the Paris Opéra in 1839) featured the soprano Maria Nau, wearing a ballet dancer's tutu, in the role of the fairy Zéila. The Italian-born dancer Teresa Rolla performed at Niblo's Garden, New York, in the late 1850s. Marie Sanlaville is depicted in the breeches role of Pepio in Louis Mérante's ballet Les deux pigeons, first presented at the Paris Opéra in 1886; the ballet's costumes were designed by Bianchini, whose name appears on the print. The Danish ballerina Margrethe Schall, whose first names are also given as Anna Margrethe or Margarethe, was a leading dancer with the Royal Danish Ballet from 1798 to 1827; one of the prints in this collection portrays her In the title role of Vincenzo Galeotti's ballet Nina (1802). Fräulein Schiller may be Kathi Schiller, b. 1830. Anna Tychsen is depicted in August Bournonville's ballet Kermessen i Brügge, first performed by the Royal Danish Ballet in 1851. Marie Zoel was praised for her clog dancing in the Yankee Clipper of Apr. 16, 1870.
