  • Joyce Dinkins, wife of New York City's first African-American mayor, David Dinkins, founded the "Reading is Recreation" program (1991), a citywide literacy program for school children. The program included visits by first grade classes to Gracie Mansion and school visits by Mrs. Dinkins. At the Mansion, authors, illustrators and celebrities shared their favorite children's books with the students.
