Summary
· Holograph logbook of the steam ship Proserpine : 17 Sep 1840 - 4 Apr 1841 : (P'ANA 0093) : 1 fascicle (11 pages; 6 leaves) : from Falmouth; Funchal; St. Vincent's; the Equator; Bahia; Angra Pequena; Orange River; Cape Voltas; Duncan's Bay; St. Helen's Bay; Cape of Good Hope; St. Helena : records weather, procurement of goods ("the natives supplied us with 2 bullocks and 3 sheep"; "taking on board 20 Tons coal"); and events ("Clifford, seaman, fell overboard"; "buried Henry Pratt, stoker"). The identity of the writer is not entirely certain, but it may be Nicolls, as he was Proserpine's Second Officer (cf. N. Joukovsky's Letters of T. L. Peacock, v. 2, p. 269). Accompanied by a much later note in the hand of Nicolls's daughter, Edith Clarke, which explains: "1840. [Thomas Love] Peacock was engaged this year in testing the Proserpine, a steam vessel which had been built at his suggestion, he salied from Falmouth on 17th Sept 1840 accompanied by Miss Love, Lieutenant Nicolls on duty, afterwards his son in law, his two daughters were also with him ..."
