Summary
After introductory remarks, the program begins with a series of video excerpts from the U.S. National Archives and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts Jerome Robbins Dance Divisions collections. Following the videos, HRH Norodom Buppha Devi is interviewed by Peter Sellars through her interpreter Rithisal Kang. She discusses the Cambodian Royal family's long-standing involvement and patronage of Khmer ballet as well as her own involvement, starting as a child training as a dancer at the age of 5. She also discusses the Apsara dance, created in 1962 for her by her grandmother, as well as her other family members' involvement in Khmer ballet. She is asked about her grandmother's role in the transformation of Cambodian classical dance in the 1940s and 1950s and efforts to preserve the Cambodian dance heritage. At 42 min., there is a dance demonstration by members of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia.
