Summary

The Herman G. Weinberg collection consists of scrapbooks containing clippings, correspondence, halftones, photographs, radio scripts and assorted film festival material. Of particular significance are hundred of letters that he exchanged with such film notables as Kenneth Anger, Jean George Auriol, Marice Bessy, Eleanor Boardman, Peter Bogdanovich, Louise Brooks, Kevin Brownlow, Luis Buñuel, James Card, René Clair, Thomas Q. Curtiss, Fitzroy Davis, Thorold Dickinson, Lotte Eisner, Robert Florey, Charles Ford, Leatrice Joy Fountain, Ludwig Gesek, John Griggs, Nelly Kaplan, Aleksandr Karaganov, Arthur Kleiner, John Kobal, Fritz Lang, Henri Langlois, Lily Latté, Jay Leyda, Pierre Lherminier, Anita Loos, Mary Loos, Herbert Luft, Denis Marion, Adolfas Mekas, Jonas Mekas, Ivor Montagu, Liam O'Leary, Flavia Paulon, Vladimir Petrić, Samson Raphaelson, Walter Reisch, Jean Renoir, Hans Richter, Paul Rotha, Marie Seton, Seymour Stern, Denise Vernac, King Vidor, Josef von Sternberg, Erich von Stroheim, Richard Watts, Jr., Fay Wray, and Basil Wright, as well as the British Film Institute and the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures (U.S.).

Biography (note)

Herman G. Weinberg was an American writer, foreign film translator, teacher, and film historian working from the 1920s to the 1980s. Born in New York City on August 6, 1908, he entred the motion picture indutry in 1927 as a musical consultant in the scoring of foreign silent films and then worked as U.S. correspondent for various European film periodicals. He was a theatre manager in Baltimore and New York during the 1930s and 1940s. Weinberg achieved acclaim for his English subtitles for numerous major foreign films, including La Strada, Open City, Paisan, The Bicycle Thief, and Shoeshine. He also wrote articles and film criticism for many periodicals and taught film history at City College in New York City. His books include The Lubitsch Touch, Saint Cinema, The Complete 'Greed', Stroheim: a Pictorial Record, The Complete 'Wedding March', and A Manhattan Odyssey, his autobiography. Weinberg died in New York City on November 7, 1983.
