Summary
  • Collection depicts aspects of the theatrical career of actor, director and theater company founder Henry D. Miller, from the late 1950s to the early 2000s. Miller's personal life is not depicted. The collection consists of two studio portraits of Miller (ca. 1970s and 1980s); views of Miller either directing or performing in various theatrical productions and at a recording session; candid shots of Miller attending an actors' workshop and a reception; views and publicity photographs of theatrical productions and views of rehearsals; views of a sound recording session, probably for voice-overs used in a television program; and views of workshop gatherings. A major portion of the collection consists of studio portraits of actors and actresses who may have applied for acting roles in Miller's theatrical productions. Also included is a collection of publicity photographs of performers (1945-1980s) collected by talent agent Maxwell Glanville.
  • Of note are candid shots of Afro-American Repertory Theatre Company (AARTC) actors, including Miller, during a taping session of James Arlington Jones's poetry for the television program "Soul" (1970); publicity photographs for the AARTC production of "Land of Lem" at the Afro-Arts Cultural Centre, Harlem, New York (1970); views of rehearsals and performances of the 1971 AARTC production of "Land of Lem"; publicity photographs of "A Raisin in the Sun," directed by Miller and produced by the Atlanta (Georgia) Theater of the Stars/Just Us Theater Company (1979); and candid shots and views of the inaugural reception for the James Baldwin Writers Workshop Theatre, held at Hamilton Grange, in Hamilton Heights, New York City (1992). Also included are views of performances, mainly in the form of contact sheets, of productions by Roger Furman's New Heritage Repertory Theatre, probably staged in Harlem, New York (ca. 1968).
