Summary
Bennett, an American composer and arranger, best known for his orchestration of many well-known Broadway and Hollywood musicals by composers such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, and Richard Rodgers, shares his memories of these people and others. The interview is sprinkled with anecdotes from the lives of Gershwin ("bad student, but natural talent"), Berlin ("best songwriter" with "unique inner ear"), Vincent Youmans ("who could not play music just like Berlin"), Kern, Ira Gershwin, Oscar Hammerstein ("talented lyricist and reserved person"), Porter, and Harry Ruby. Other topics include analysis of songs as a genre, stress from writing music for movies, and more.
