Summary

David Berger interviews Günther Rennert, opera director and administrator (Germany Today, program no. 811), who discusses his career as opera stage director, and shares his experiences working at various opera houses around the world such as Munich Opera House and Metropolitan Opera in New York. He also speaks about his influences such as Walter Felsenstein, an Austrian-German theater and opera director, whose assistant he became at the Oper Frankfurt (Frankfurt Opera) in the1939. He also criticizes various translations of opera librettos into languages of the countries of performances, and says that all of them should be performed in the original language; and various young opera directors and producers for their contemporary improvisations of classical operas. Includes audio recording of an excerpt from the opera Der Freischütz [Günther Rennert, stage director].
