Summary
This episode of the British music TV documentary show "South Bank show" (Parts 1-3) features the biography of 1950's pop sensation Johnnie Ray, whose perfomance and music had greatly influenced rock artists such as Elvis Presley. Many of Johnnie Ray's contemporaries, old childhood friends, and fellow performers share their recollections of him, a formidable performer and talented songwriter often overshadowed in rock history, due to his personal life. The show was sponsored by Taylors of Harrogate Coffee. Featured song and television excerpts: "Cry" (Ed Sullivan Show 1952), "Take the A train" (performed by Duke Ellington), 1956 interview on "Person to person with Ed Murrow", "Wheel of fortune" (performed by Kay Starr), Louis Jordan's "Let the good times roll" (unidentified performer), "Paths of paradise" (The big shot, 1956), "The little white cloud that cried", "Teardops from my eyes" (sung by Ruth Brown), "Tweedle Dee" (sung by LaVern Baker), "She didn't say nothin' at all", "Tell the lady goodbye", "Whiskey and gin", "I'm gonna walk with my Lord" (Ed Sullivan Show 1953), "Walkin' my baby back home", "All of me", "I'll never fall in love again", "Let's walk that-a-way" (with Doris Day), "My heart cries for you" (performed by the Beverley Sisters), "Please don't talk about me when I'm gone", "Such a night", "Alexander's ragtime band" ; "After you get what you want" (performed by Marilyn Monroe) ; "If you believe" (from the 1954 motion picture musical "There's no business like show business"), "A sinner am I", Look homeward angel", "Mystery train" (performed by Elvis Presley), Elvis Presley bit (from 1956 Shower of Stars clip), "Just walkin' in the rain", "Yes, tonight Josephine", "I'm gonna move to the outskirts of town", "Day by day" (with the Billy Taylor Quartet), "Bury me on the lone prairie", "Am I blue?" (last live video performance of Judy Garland), "Suspicious minds" (sung by Elvis Presley), "Somebody stole my gal", "Cry" (Rotterdam, 1982), "Oh the rain", "The little white cloud that cried" (Reprise and finale)
