Summary
BBC program in commemoration of the 20th anniversary since the death in 1975 of the Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich. A brief biography of the composer narrated by the host is followed by the performance of two of his symphonies conducted by L. Bernstein and filmed in Vienna in 1987. Symphony no. 9 is transmitted with 2 intermissions during which Bernstein elaborates on the creation of symphonies by famous European composers and explores the mystic of symphonies numbered 9. Bernstein presents a detailed analysis of Shostakovich's Symphony no. 9 by dissecting it into movements and examining them individually. The end of this recording contains a 14 minute BBC promotional program reflecting on Bernstein's successful career of a composer of musicals. Commentators include his collaborators on Broadway: theatrical producer Harold Prince, lyricists Betty Comden and Adolph Green, stage director Arthur Laurents, singer Barbara Cook, conductor Lukas Foss, and orchestrator Sid Ramin.
