- Part 1. Philip Sterling, the writer and public relations executive who worked for the Columbia Broadcasting System for many years, interviews Sam Battle. Battle who was the first black police officer in the city of New York and one of Bert Williams's friends since 1903, shares his memories about Williams, one of the black-featured pre-eminent entertainers of the Vaudeville era. He talks about Williams who became one of the most popular comedians for all audiences of his time, about his personal and professional achievements, and about his friends and family.
