Description
12 prints : engravings with etching; plate marks 13 x 21 cm, on sheets 19 x 26 cm
Summary
  • Each print (except title print) depicts two busts, usually one male and one female, in fantastic headgear with auricular, zoomorphic and/or "cosse de pois" (peapod) ornamentation. Three prints are signed in lower left corner: A.M.F.
  • In lower left corner of title print are characters that have been read variously as "R. N. 1. 2 (= Rami Nr. 12)" (Katalog der Ornamentstichsammlung, Berlin), "RAMI. 12" (Fuhring); "R.M.I " (Genus Bononiae); and "R M 12" (Biblioteca comunale dell'Archiginnasio (Bologna, Italy)). The letters are possibly to be interpreted as "R.N.N.R." with the last "N" and "R" mirror-reversed and the "N"s superimposed. The upright of the reversed "R" could also represent "I" or "1"; it is followed by a "2" rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise, which could also represent an inverted "u"; a small superscript "o" precedes the first "N." An anagram or puzzle version of "INR" or "IuN[i]oR" was perhaps intended.
  • Watermark: Moor's head in profile, in an oval.

Note
  • Title and name of engraver from first print, in which "Agostino" and "intagliò" appear on banderoles at top and bottom; an ornamental letter "M" with a small capital "I" in the vertex occupies most of the image space; and the other letters of the surname are represented by an ornamental "E" and objects in the shape of the letters "I", "T", and two "L"s, numbered to show order.
  • Date on title print has also been read as 1628 or 1638, and the work has been ascribed to the elder Agostino Mitelli (1609-1660). For attribution to the younger Agostino Mitelli (the elder's grandson), see: "Le incisioni di Agostino Mitelli e di Agostino Mitelli il Giovane," by Giuseppina Raggi, in Grafica d'arte, anno 14, no. 53 (gennaio-marzo 2003), pages 2-7. See also: Le collezioni d'arte della Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna : le incisioni. I, Giuseppe Maria Mitelli / a cura di Franca Varignana, ©1978, page xxx and plate xxvi.
  • Place of publication deduced from engraver's place of activity.
  • Katalog der Ornamentstichsammlung der Staatlichen Kunstbibliothek, Berlin, and Fuhring, "Style 'cosses de pois,'" ascribe the work to the elder Agostino Mitelli and give date as 1638. Genus Bononiae ascribes to the elder Mitelli and gives date as 1628 or 1688(?). See references below.
  • Except for title print, the prints are reversed copies of 11 prints (no. 4-5, 7, 9-11, 13 and 15-18) in Ouurage rare et nouueau, contenant plusieurs desseins de merueilleuse recreation sous diuerses caprices et gentillesses representees en l'industrieuse decoupure d'un chappeau, inuentée par D. Boutemie, orfeure ordinaire du roy, pour les inuentions de son cabinet, published in Paris, 1636. (Title appears as OVVRAGE RARE ET NOVVEAV; usually cited as Ouvrage rare et nouveau.) See article "Style 'cosses de pois,'" by Peter Fuhring and Michèle Bimbenet-Privat, in Gazette des beaux-arts, v. 139 (2002), catalog numbers 68-82; Katalog der Ornamentstichsammlung der Staatlichen Kunstbibliothek, Berlin, entry 310. Digital reproductions of 18 of the 20 Boutemie prints available in the Online Collection der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Inventarnummer A 83289-A 83308), http://skd-online-collection.skd.museum/; several also on Web site of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The Victoria and Albert also holds three "reverse copies" of the Boutemie prints, probably from the present suite; one is reproduced on its site: http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O675908/ouvrage-rare-et-nouveau-contenant-print-boutemie-denis/.
  • Prints are numbered 1-12 in upper right corner, according to Fuhring. Print Collection copies are without the numbers.
  • Libreria Vinciana catalog gives title as "[Maschere]"; prints in copy described are unnumbered.
  • Genus Bononiae holds two copies, described on its Web site (viewed April 26, 2016) under title "Bizzarrie per maschere con acconciature e copricapi antropomorfi e zoomorfi"; inscription on title print transcribed as "AGOSTINO/I/INTAGLIO' R.M.I 1628 (?)." Prints are unnumbered.
  • Alternate title supplied in catalog of Biblioteca comunale dell'Archiginnasio (Bologna, Italy) (viewed online, April 26, 2014): "Invenzioni per maschere."
