Joan Levy Bernstein speaks with Professor Philip Cantilon about her early dance training; how she came to train with Doris Humphrey and become a member of the Humphrey-Weidman Company; her experience working as Humphrey's assistant at the Bennington School of the Dance, in 1936; Humphrey's choreographic process; Bernstein's family's view of her becoming a modern dancer; Humphrey's technique including as compared with that of Martha Graham; Charles Weidman as a choreographer; Humphrey's Water study and her New dance; touring including Pauline Lawrence's role in arranging venues; her thoughts on how the public viewed male modern dancers including as compared to male ballet dancers.
