In connection with her recent presentation of Chinese Action-Dances, Sophie Delza speaks with Ida Wilcher about classical Chinese theater [Chinese opera]; topics include: the types of roles she performs; the musical accompaniment including the use of percussion; her performance of modern dance and Chinese traditional dance in China; her background in dance; female and male roles; the transmission of roles from teacher to student; female actors; Mei Lanfang; the current state of Chinese traditional dance in China; different types of plays in classical Chinese theater; folk dance in China; the apparent absence in China, at least as of 1951, of so-called concert dance; theaters in China including their physical appearance and the audience; the highly stylized nature of classical Chinese theater as seen, for example, in the entrances and the exits; Sophia Delza also speaks briefly about Tʻai chi chʻüan [t'ai chi] including its origins and purpose [final approximate minute of the recording consists of unrelated material].
