Summary
The voice on this recording is identified as tenor Paul Sperry who is preparing for a lecture on the French composer Francis Poulenc whose songs Sperry values immensely and often includes in his repertoire. Sperry explores the composition of Poulenc's songs and compares them to songs of other composers that he performs (Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann). He singles out two major aspects that made Poulenc so prominent in this genre: the emphasis he put on the choice of poets and poems for his songs, and his collaboration with a renowned interpreter of the French art song, baritone Pierre Bernac. Sperry also details his approach to preparing for his performances of Poulenc's works. The last 4 minutes of the recording is remains of a previous recording of joint violin and piano practices.
