Description
Two audio streaming files (approximately one hour and 28 minutes): digital, stereo
Summary
  • Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 32 minutes). [First approximate 20 seconds appears to be a fragment of the lecture recorded on streaming audio file 2, as described below.] Sophia Delza, in what sounds like a run-through of an instructional recording, directs a putative listener, movement-by-movement, through a series of exercises, with occasional commentary on their nature and purpose. At approximately 21:20 minutes, following a short gap, Delza recites a series of fable-like stories in rhyme. [From approximately 26:33 into the audio file to the end, the recording consists of a discussion between the same unidentified male and female speakers heard in streaming file 2, as described below.]
  • Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 55 minutes). The first approximate 20 minutes consists (with gaps) of an unidentified male speaker lecturing on Italian society and the role of literature, in particular the novel, including The leopard [Il gattapardo], by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa; beginning at approximately 19:45 minutes, an unidentified male speaker and unidentified female speaker [referred to as "Vivian"] discuss the filming of a woman in an institution for the mentally-ill and her relationship with her doctor [from approximately 33:10 minutes through 48:16 minutes, the recording consists of loud ambient noise]; the discussion resumes and continues until almost the end of the recording; the final approximate 10 seconds contains a fragment of the above-mentioned lecture on Italian society and literature.

Note
  • The first part of the recording includes Sophia Delza instructing a putative listener how to perform a series of exercises (streaming audio file 1). The second part of the recording includes excerpts from what sounds like a lecture on Italian society and the novel; the third part contains an unrelated discussion between two unidentified people primarily about filming a woman in an institution for the mentally ill (streaming audio file 2). The time and place of these recordings is not specified, but based on the speaker's reference to the death of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, the lecture could not have been earlier than 1957.
  • Title supplied by cataloger based on content of recording.
  • Overall sound quality is good. The recording is marred by occasional short gaps, periods of ambient noise, and periods of "tape hiss," but the speakers' voices are easily intelligible.
