Michael Herman and Mary Ann Herman speak about their lives and careers as folk dance teachers including people and organizations that supported ethnic folk dancing; their involvement with Ukrainian folk dance and culture, including the problem of ethnic nationalism; Elizabeth Burchenal; developing techniques to teach ethnic folk dancing to Americans; their founding of Folk Dance House and their constant research; the decline of folk dancing in Europe after World War I and its preservation by ethnic groups in the United States; teaching folk dancing at the World's Fair [of 1939-1940]; the use of live music due to the dearth of recorded folk dance music; anecdotes about teaching at the Ukrainian community center in New York City [ends abruptly but continues on streaming file 2].
