Summary
Jennifer Dunning talks about all the great male dancers not only in American Ballet Theatre (ABT) but all over the world; reasons for good male dancers started with the Bolshoi Ballet touring in 1956, the defection of Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov, and George Balanchine's choreography; Variations for Four was created by Dolin the year after the Bolshoi tour; Christopher Gable commenting on Nureyev when dancing with Royal Ballet; explaining the male categories and what has changed for men dancers over the years; John Selya is a current example of dancer not fitting into a particular role; mania for incorporating ballet and modern dance including Twyla Tharp's work; male dancers at ABT and how much the lines have been blurred between the categories; how wonderful it is for the audience to see male dancers taking on different roles and crossing lines including Ethan Stiefel; Balanchine made ballet more athletic and bold; acting is now a problem with dancers since technique is so important; easier today for men to become dancers; good time for ABT and pulling itself together; McKenzie promoting stars which helps with marketing; and the challange to do new choreography.
