Summary
Handwritten letter to Rev. Henry Foster Burder, from Bury, dated December 4, 1808 and signed by Thomas Clarkson. 40 lines of 2 sides of folded 4to sheet, integral address leaf with wax stamp. Although addressed to H.L. Burder, this is almost certainly to Henry Foster Burder, an non-conformist minister and one of the founders of the Religious Tract Society and London Missionary Society. After the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act in 1807, Clarkson redirected his energies into ensuring the effective enforcement of the new law and the eventual abolition of slavery itself. Autograph letter signed (ALS).
