Description
1 print in 1 box : woodcut, white on black; image 20 x 508 cm, sheet 38 x 538 cm rolled to 38 x 89 cm, box 42 x 93 x 17 cm
Summary
  • "Following his performance Transcription musicale de la structure des arbres, which was shown in Ardèche (France) in 2011 and for which Penone had recorded the musical structure of different trees' essences, he decided to give it a physical incarnation. He took a 5 meter long beam of mélèze (larch) wood and engraved it with the tree's partition [i.e. score]. From this matrix, he then created an etching-print, or xylography, of an unprecedented magnitude"--Publisher's website.
  • Printed on a single sheet of 300 g watercolor paper with deckled edges. Image represents the transcription in musical notes of the sound made by a larch tree when struck by Penone with a rubber mallet as part of his project Transcription musicale de la structure des arbres, 2011.

  • The project also produced a series of 7 engravings representing the artist's impression of 7 of the trees and their characteristic sounds, and a score transcribing the sound of each of 14 trees in conventional musical notation. These were published separately in 2012, both under the title Transcription musicale de la structure des arbres, respectively by Bernard Chaveau's imprints Galerie 8 + 4 and Couleurs contemporaines; the score was reissued in 2015. The engravings were issued in a wooden box; the score was issued in book form together with reproductions of the engravings and an audio disc containing the actual sounds. Audio disc is labeled: Giuseppe Penone: Traversées--14 arbres, 2012. See publisher's website for further details.
