- Summary
- Van Horne & Clarkson and Streatfeild & Levinus Clarkson Co. were American merchant companies. This letter book contains their copies of letters written to them by the Dutch merchant firm P. en C. Van Eeghen. The American merchants exported American and West Indian goods such as sugar, coffee, potash, tobacco, rice, cotton, wheat, rye, and spices, which were sold by the Van Eeghens in Amsterdam on consignment. Many of the letters written by the Van Eeghens include a list of commodities with their current prices at market. The letters also discuss the French Revolutionary Wars and their effect on the merchants' activities; and the capture of the American merchants' ship, the Cheesman, bound from New York to Amsterdam, in 1797.
