Summary
Select performances from the 2008 edition of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company Faculty concert, in which performances were staged by faculty members in collaboration with members of the MCDC dance corps and student repertory dancers (RUGs). The program begins with a performance of the piece Next, choreographed and danced by Janet Charleston. A performance of Just For Fun, choreographed and danced by Louise Burns and Luis Gabriel Zaragosa, follows (8:24). Daniel Roberts then dances a piece, Neues Stuck, which he also choreographed (21:12). Following this, Cunningham dancers perform a Merce Cunningham work, Trails, as historically reconstructed by Robert Swinston and Stephan Moore, with music by John Cage (30:05). A change of pace comes next, as MCDC archivist David Vaughan and frequent MCDC pianist/accompanist Pat Richter create a cabaret act consisting of a blend of standards and Richter's own compositions, entitled A Fine Romance (51:00). Following this, former Cunningham corps member and current instructor Jean Freebury and a corps of dancers perform the Cunningham piece Trace, with the choreography determined by 'chance operations', the frequent Cunningham device of improvising movement through rolling dice just prior to taking the stage. Music for this piece was composed by Chris Woltmann. (1:16:12). The presentation concludes with the Cunningham work Enter, as historically reconstructed by former MCDC corps member and current instructor Patricia Lent, with music by frequent Cunningham collaborator David Tudor (1:26:23).
