- Summary
- A discussion by writer and New York Times dance critic Alistair Macaulay at a lunchtime series at the 92nd Street Y. Macaulay discusses the artistic ferment taking place in the dance milieu in 1950s New York, centering particularly on the then up-and-coming choreographers Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp and Jerome Robbins, and the ways in which they were influenced by the previous generation of choreographers and critics, particularly Martha Graham, George Balanchine, Edwin Denby and Anthony Tudor. This presentation is interspersed with excerpts from Cunningham pieces performed by former Merce Cunningham Dance Company corps members Brandon Collwes and Emma Desjardins. Macaulay makes brief remarks prior to and following each performance segment. The first piece is a section from 1977's Fractions (25:10). Next comes a solo dance by Desjardins taken from 1993's CRWDSPCR (37:46). This is shortly followed by part of 1973's Changing Steps (37:46), succeeded by Collwes' solo from Nearly Ninety (2009), a work which was created for him by Cunningham (42:44). The final piece is a section of Crossover (2009), the legendary choreographer's penultimate work. The content concludes with an extremely brief audience Q&A, which is cut off abruptly at the conclusion of the digital file.
