• Middle English translation of a Latin version of the work by St. Catherine known as Libro della divina dottrina, Tratto della divina provvidenza, or simply Dialogo. The Dialago was translated into Latin by Cristofero Guidini and Stefano Maconi and in part by Raymund of Capua; Guidini's version, which is close to the Italian, is largely followed here. "A reading of the text fails to bear out the assertion that 'Dane James' was the translator, or at least, the chief translator of the work"; someone by this name may have assisted the anonymous translator. • Printed in 2 columns. Gothic type; 41 lines.
• Illustrations: 11 woodcuts (Hodnett 862-869), comprising a full-page cut within historiated border on verso of title page, repeated on page [349], and 9 smaller cuts within double-line borders, including cut on title page and two repeats. Four historiated border pieces flanking the cuts on title page and page [19], and two type ornament rules on title page. Scroll above cut on title page, with printed legend: Ecce ancilla Domini. Title page and first page of each of the seven parts printed in red and black. Historiated and ornamental initials in several sizes.
