Number of cuts in pt. 1 differs from that recorded in Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke (226), and in pt. 2 from Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke (214) and Essling and Sander (206). All cuts except that in pt. 2, leaf LXXXVIIIb, column 1, within two- or four-piece historiated borders. Historiated woodcut border on preliminary leaf 8b, leaf [I]a of part [1], and leaf [I]a of pt. 2. Many cuts signed: N, possibly representing the cutter or his workshop. Many are based on cuts in the Giunti editions of the Malermi Bible, 1490 and 1492, on which the present edition is closely modeled. For comparison of the cuts in the 1490 Giunti edition and the present 1493 edition, see Hind, Arthur. An introduction to a history of woodcut. London, 1935, v. 2, pages 464-475; the historiated borders in the two editions are described in Hind, page 503, no. A1a and A5a. See also: Pollard, Alfred W. "Two illustrated Italian Bibles," in The library, 2nd series, v. 3, no. 11 (July 1902), pages 226-242.
  • Artists of the 1490 and 1493 editions of the Malermi Bible are called respectively the "Popular Designer" and the "Classic Designer" by Hind. Some works in Hind's "classic" style are attributed by some recent authorities to the miniaturist Benedetto Bordon. See Armstrong, Lilian. Studies of Renaissance miniaturists in Venice, 2003, pages 269-270.
  • For reproductions of the cuts, see Barbieri (cited below), v. 2, Tav. C1-C398.
