Summary

Depictions of individuals, school activities, social events, and campus buildings related to the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, in Tuskegee, Alabama, from the mid-1900s to the mid 1920s. The collection consists of studio portraits of Tuskegee officials; group portraits of school educators, trustees, students, and visiting dignitaries; views of student assemblies, processions, arrivals of school visitors, and official gatherings; views of class and workshop instruction that include construction projects, electrical and industrial work, and farming; and exterior views of campus administrative, instructional and residential buildings, as well as former plantation dwellings.
Of note are studio portraits of Tuskegee founder and principal Booker T. Washington, his successor Robert R. Moton, and trustee William G. Willcox; group portraits showing Washington with Tuskegee benefactor Andrew Carnegie, trustees and members of the Armstrong Association visiting Tuskegee (1906); views of the ceremonies related to the unveiling of the monumental bronze statue of Washington at Tuskegee (1922); and views of classroom instruction and photographic displays in the Institute's Photographic Division (ca. 1925).

Biography (note)

Tuskegee University was started in 1881 as the Tuskegee Normal School. Under the leadership of founder and first principal Booker T. Washington and his belief in industrial education, the school expanded and was incorporated by the Alabama state legislature in 1892, renaming the school the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute. The school's name was later changed to Tuskegee Institute in 1937, and to Tuskegee University in 1985. This collection is attributed to William Goodenow Willcox (sometimes spelled Wilcox) who served on the Tuskegee Board of Trustees from 1907-1923. Willcox was a lawyer, insurance company manager, president of the New York City Board of Education during the late 1910s, and a civic leader in Staten Island, New York.
